This federal exemption applies only to concealed handguns and does not supersede state laws that regulate the possession of firearms in specific locations, such as courthouses and schools. In Oregon, for instance, retired officers are prohibited from carrying concealed firearms in public buildings as outlined in ORS 166.370.

Course Details
The qualification process uses the DPSST PQC-1 course of fire, which is designed to test and validate marksmanship proficiency. Participants must bring the following items to the course:
- A professional-quality firearm, either a semi-automatic or a double-action revolver.
- A suitable holster for the firearm.
- A magazine pouch.
- A minimum of 100 rounds of ammunition.
