A Deep Dive into the Course

The Defensive Low Light Handgun Tactics course is an intermediate-level program conducted entirely at a shooting range. Students will learn and practice the essential techniques needed to handle a handgun safely and confidently in low-light conditions. This hands-on course includes live-fire exercises that emphasize judgmental shooting, target identification, and flashlight manipulation.

Prerequisites

To enroll, participants must meet one of the following prerequisites:

Completion of Defensive Handgun Tactics 1
Certification in DPSST Armed Security with Private Security Identification (PSID)
An equivalent Level 1 handgun course from a reputable provider

These prerequisites ensure that participants have the foundational knowledge and skills required to succeed in the course.

Core Skills and Topics

Throughout the six-hour training session, participants will develop a comprehensive skill set, including:

Safety Rules and Range Procedures: Mastering protocols and adopting the proper mindset for low-light situations.
Flashlight Techniques: Learning to manipulate a handheld flashlight effectively while handling a firearm.
Force Escalation: Understanding how to appropriately use a flashlight to escalate or de-escalate force.
Weapon Presentation and Ready Positions: Practicing the 4-step weapon presentation and various ready stances.
Shooting Techniques: Developing proficiency in single-hand shooting and reloading with a flashlight.
Tactical Considerations: Exploring the benefits of weapon-mounted lights and practicing buddy lighting and moving-off-line drills.

Participants will also engage in after-action analysis, accuracy assessments, and drills that address real-world scenarios. These exercises help develop judgmental shooting skills, enabling students to make critical decisions under pressure.

Required Equipment and Recommendations

To ensure a productive and safe training experience, participants must bring the following items:

A valid government-issued photo ID
A handgun with a holster
At least three magazines and a magazine pouch
A minimum of 250 rounds of ammunition
A handheld flashlight with a pouch or pocket clip

Optional gear such as knee pads, a cleaning kit, and additional flashlights or spare batteries are also recommended. Since the range is outdoors, students should dress appropriately for the weather and wear shoes with good lateral support. Snacks, drinks, and a dinner are advised as refrigeration is unavailable onsite.

For those without the necessary equipment, rental options are available upon request. All firearms must arrive unloaded and secured in a case or holster and remain so until directed by a certified DFI instructor.

Certification and Benefits

Upon successfully completing the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion. This certification is recognized as continuing education for professionals and may be used to fulfill mandatory training requirements for employment. While this course does not meet the criteria for obtaining an Oregon Concealed Handgun License (ORS 166.291), it is an invaluable addition to any personal or professional training program.
