What to Expect in the Introduction to Handguns Course

This course offers a patient and supportive environment where new shooters can build their confidence and skills. Throughout the class, our experienced instructors focus on key aspects of handgun operation, ensuring that each participant gains a thorough understanding of safe firearm handling and use.

During the course, you’ll learn how to properly load and unload magazines and speedloaders, as well as how to safely load and unload firearms themselves. We’ll cover essential handling and passing techniques, ensuring you’re comfortable with the basic mechanics of firearm operation. You’ll also receive instruction on manipulating firearm controls and the fundamental ready positions that every responsible gun owner should know.

One of the primary focuses of the course is on the fundamentals of marksmanship. You’ll participate in familiarization firing, where you can practice what you’ve learned in a controlled environment. Our instructors provide one-on-one guidance to help you analyze your accuracy and improve your shooting skills. By the end of the course, you’ll have a solid understanding of how to safely and effectively operate a handgun, which is critical whether you’re planning to use a firearm for personal protection, sport, or recreation.

For those who have completed their Concealed Handgun Safety Training, this course is an excellent next step to deepen your understanding and practice of handgun use. While it’s not a requirement, we find that students who have taken the Concealed Handgun Safety Training beforehand often feel more prepared and confident during the Introduction to Handguns course.

Preparing for the Course

If you’re planning to take the course but don’t yet own a handgun, don’t worry. We offer rental handguns, complete with ammunition, so you can participate fully and learn what you need in a firearm before making a purchase. This can be especially beneficial for new shooters who are still figuring out their preferences and needs in a handgun.

Participants are required to bring certain gear to the course, including a firearm, 50 rounds of ammunition, and protective gear for your eyes and ears. If you don’t have this equipment, rentals are available with advanced notice. Additionally, be sure to dress appropriately for the weather, wear closed-toed shoes, and bring any necessary items like sunscreen, a hat, a pen, and a notepad for taking notes.

It’s important to note that all firearms brought to the course must be unloaded and securely stored in a case or holster until instructed otherwise by our certified instructors. Safety is our top priority, and we ensure that every aspect of our training reflects that commitment.
