Proficiency for Threatening Situations
When it comes to home defense, few tools are as versatile and effective as the shotgun. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter, a law enforcement professional, or someone who has never handled a shotgun before, understanding how to use this powerful tool for defensive purposes can significantly increase your ability to protect your family and loved ones. At Defensive Firearms Instruction, our Defensive Shotgun Tactics 1 course is specifically designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to employ a shotgun safely and competently in defensive situations.
Who Is This Course For?
The Defensive Shotgun Tactics 1 course caters to a broad range of students, from those who have been using shotguns for years—whether for hunting, competition, or law enforcement—to those with no prior shotgun experience. The course is designed to take you from the basics to a level of proficiency where you can confidently use a shotgun in a defensive encounter, both inside and outside the home.
Before enrolling in the Defensive Shotgun Tactics 1 course, students must first complete the Defensive Handgun Tactics 1 course or an equivalent Level 1 course through a reputable company. This prerequisite ensures that each student has a solid foundation in handgun competency, which will support the transition to more advanced defensive training.
What You Will Learn
The Defensive Shotgun Tactics 1 course is an eight-hour, entry-level training program that takes place at a shooting range. Throughout the day, students will engage in both lecture-based learning and hands-on manipulations, ultimately gaining a comprehensive understanding of how to effectively use a shotgun for defense. Here’s a closer look at the course structure:
Lecture Portion
The day begins with a lecture that covers the mindset and theories necessary for employing a shotgun in defensive scenarios. You’ll learn about the different types of shotguns available, as well as the various sight systems, side saddles, slings, and lights that can enhance your shotgun’s functionality. The lecture also delves into the types of ammunition that can be used in a defensive encounter—such as
00 Buck, birdshot, and slugs—and how to choose the right one depending on the situation.
This portion of the course lays the groundwork for understanding how to optimize your shotgun for defense and prepares you for the more hands-on aspects of the training.
Dry Fire Manipulations
Once the lecture is complete, students move into
dry fire manipulations, where they will practice fundamental shotgun handling techniques without live ammunition. This is crucial for building muscle memory and confidence. You’ll work on basic fundamentals such as stance, grip, trigger control, and follow-through—all key elements in maintaining control and accuracy.
The dry fire section also includes instruction on loading and unloading your weapon, quick slug changeovers, and progressive loading. Perhaps most importantly, you’ll practice clearing
malfunctions, so you’re prepared to handle any unexpected issues that may arise in a real-life defensive situation.
Live Fire Manipulations
The course culminates in the live fire manipulations portion, where students will put their newly acquired skills to the test. You’ll practice shooting from a variety of positions—standing, kneeling, and prone—as well as shooting from behind cover. This helps you develop the flexibility needed to react to real-world defensive scenarios where movement and positioning can make all the difference.
Additionally, students will engage in weapons transitions and learn how to move while shooting, adding a level of dynamic complexity to their training. Finally, you’ll finish the course by engaging multiple targets, both near and far, simulating the types of scenarios you might encounter in a real defensive situation.
What You’ll Need
In order to participate in the Defensive Shotgun Tactics 1 course, there are several required pieces of equipment. This ensures that you’re fully prepared for the hands-on aspects of the training. Required gear includes:
Students will need to bring lunch, snacks, and drinks, as refrigeration is unavailable. A local market nearby provides additional options for lunch.
For those who do not own all of the required gear, rental equipment—including shotguns, ammunition, and eye/ear protection—is available with advanced notice for an additional fee.
